Based on instructions from , I managed to build the latest version of ImageMagick without perturbing the version provided by the repository. First, download the tarball from . Then, fire up the terminal:

# Refer for other packages you might need
sudo apt-get install checkinstall libx11-dev libxext-dev zlib1g-dev libpng12-dev libjpeg-dev libfreetype6-dev libxml2-dev
tar -xzvf ImageMagick-6.8.7-1.tar.gz
cd ImageMagick-6.8.7-1
./configure --prefix=/opt/imagemagick-6.8 LDFLAGS='-L/usr/lib'
sudo checkinstall

Enjoy powerful image processing/manipulations directly from the command line: .

To uninstall

sudo dpkg -r imagemagick-6.8.7
