Build ImageMagick 6.8 on Linux Mint Maya

Based on instructions from http://askubuntu.com/questions/267746/how-can-i-install-the-latest-upstream-version-of-imagemagick-without-compiling , I managed to build the latest version of ImageMagick without perturbing the version provided by the repository. First, download the tarball from https://launchpad.net/imagemagick/main/6.8.7-1 . Then, fire up the terminal:

# Refer http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/precise/imagemagick for other packages you might need
sudo apt-get install checkinstall libx11-dev libxext-dev zlib1g-dev libpng12-dev libjpeg-dev libfreetype6-dev libxml2-dev
tar -xzvf ImageMagick-6.8.7-1.tar.gz
cd ImageMagick-6.8.7-1
./configure --prefix=/opt/imagemagick-6.8 LDFLAGS='-L/usr/lib'
make
sudo checkinstall

Enjoy powerful image processing/manipulations directly from the command line: http://www.imagemagick.org/script/command-line-options.php .

To uninstall

sudo dpkg -r imagemagick-6.8.7
