One of the great things about open source software is that the possibility of having a backdoor is significantly less compared to proprietary software. Since the news about American government spying on everyone (including Americans) surfaced, privacy concern has become an important issue. Here is a website that shows how one can safeguard his/her privacy: It lists many alternatives to software that are seemingly in bed with the PRISM program such as Skype and Google products.
