Artha ( is an offline thesaurus/WordNet program for Linux. It’s easy to use yet very powerful. It does regular expression search, which is very useful for people like me whose first language is not English, since I tend to forget the exact spelling of words from time to time. It also features a non-intrusive taskbar notification, spelling suggestions, and detailed word usage. Best of all, it’s open-source and free to use for both Windows and Linux users!

Details about installation on Ubuntu are described on the website. An older version of Artha is available in Lucid Lynx repositories. What I think would be great additions to Artha are:

  • Show recently searched words (like History).
  • Show pronunciation keys. Better yet, include a text-to-speech engine (perhaps as a plugin).
